DESIGN

Dutch design is a term used to connote design in the Netherlands and is considered as an attitude and not defined to a nationality. Dutch design has the most quirky, minimalistic, and eye-catching designs. Dutch
designers challenge themselves to combine things that usually don’t combine, giving materials their worth.
An example of a bird house on the clay-tiled roof done by a Dutch designer Klaas Kuiken is shown above. This is a creative way of sealing up cracks on any rooftop and bringing nature back into our lives by providing a warm shelter for the birds away from predators like cats. This innovative idea is simple yet useful for any housefolds.
In Singapore, there is also local product desginer brands such as Naiise and cat socrates that has its own Singaporean style of designing. An example would be Cat Socrates’ peranankan patterned cups as shown
at the side. It is a unique way of putting tradition into modern day design.
In the documentary, it was mentioned that Dutch design is humbily “not to be able to be proud or to brag about your own quality” of our designs. This statement has inspired me to work towards making a good work instead of working for credit.
It was also stated that “the starting point is daily life and maybe from there we get to the extraordinary shape” which motivated me to design to improve lives with my design. At last, the statement made “always think about processes and when you rethink about processes, you are also able to come up with new outcomes with new products with new ideas” make me understood the importance of design processes. Design process will play a big part in making a final outcome.
