CAT A (READING SPACE)

Inspired by Thailand’s traditional flower of Buddhism, lotus, to create a space that allows people to read in. As a lotus flower that is fully bloomed and open represents full enlightenment and self-awareness, the usage of the space reflects the representation of the design.

Inspired from the research of M.R. Kukrit's Heritage Home in Thailand that is raised on stilts in traditional Thai style, all connected by a wooden corridor. There is a lot of use of lotus in the house - as seen on the ceiling as ornaments and the plants. Lotus has its own symbolisation in the Thai culture itself as Thailand is a Buddhist country, making the lotus the traditional flower.  The flower also represents rebirth, both in a figurative and a literal sense.

CASE STUDY: M.R. Kukrit's Heritage Home in Bangkok, Thailand

Lotus ornaments used around the house, they are carved even on ceramic pots.

Pattern Inspirations of a lotus:

Ideation & Conceptualisation:

Abstracting the pattern of the structure and creating furniture for people to use. These furniture allow them to rest on or sit and read.

As it increases, there is also a change  in height of each level stacked creating a rhythmic effect. It closes up nicely at the top just like a lotus. The openings allow sunlight to shine into the space as people read, making it very relaxing.
